Leafs fans are putting themselves through more misery overanalyzing how close they were to winning the NHL Draft Lottery

The Toronto Maple Leafs had a bad week and Monday it got worse.

Not only did Toronto lose the lottery and the chance to draft Alexis Lafrenière, but their ping pong ball was so tantalizingly close to being sucked up first that it added insult to injury.

As Corwin McCallum, an associate producer with TSN, put it, the close encounter was the equivalent of John Tavares hitting the post on an open net.
Tavares, of course, hit the post with a shot in Game Five against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Leafs would go on and be eliminated by ninth-seeded Columbus.

Corwin’s tweet has been retweeted over 3.5k times and has over 11k likes. Leafs fans aren’t handling it well.

Meanwhile, there’s a conspiracy theory emerging on Twitter that the Rangers’ ping pong ball was weighted so they would win.

Thanks, Hockey Twitter. Who knew a ping pong ball machine could be so fun?
